About Newton Poppleford and the group . . .

Newton Poppleford

Newton Poppleford is a village in East Devon, straddling the main road (A3052) that runs east from Exeter towards Sidmouth and Lyme Regis, and about 4 miles inland from the coast.  The nearby settlements of Harpford, Burrow, Southerton, Venn Ottery, and Northmostown are all (for the Group’s purposes) included in our remit.

The River Otter is at the eastern side of Newton Poppleford, running south towards its mouth at Budleigh Salterton.  The river itself has been a factor in the development of the village, powering a silk mill that provided work for local people in the 18th century.

The Local History Group

Our Local History Group was formed in 2014 with the objectives of collecting, saving, documenting and recording information about the local area.  This came about partly because the commemoration of the outbreak of WW1 increased interest in the past, and a growing concern that while there are still some people around who have some memories of part of the war and the times following; these won’t be around for ever.

Quantities of old documents and memorabilia had been deposited in the village hall, some in the attic (possibly under attack by squirrels) and only looked at occasionally by anyone who might be interested.

Books have been written about this area of East Devon, but there are gaps to be filled in so this task is to be addressed in the coming months and years.

MEETINGS are held at 2.30pm in NP Village Hall usually on the first Monday of each month.  You will be welcome to join us.

My Great Uncle Bernard Verriour will be celebrated on Sunday. I have photos and a
painting plus pictures of the school where my Great Grandfather, Arthur Verriour, was Headmaster. My Grandmother, Elsie, was an assistant teacher at Musbury. The War diaries show that Bernard was killed at Zouave Valley.

Hello Billy. I think your parents must have bought Littledown Nursery from my parents, Roy and Ida Southall. They must have sold the estate round about 1949/1950 and moved to the Exonia caravan park in Exeter. I went to school in Newton Poppleford and remember Mr. Bevin.

    Hi
I’m trying to find out if anywhere I can see school records etc about a relation of mine. She was orphaned in 1920 and placed with a family in Newton Poppleford.
Her birth name was Constance Parkhouse. She was placed with a family by a charity for Tailors as her father was a tailor before killed in Ww1. Her mum then died of Spanish flu 1920
The family she went to may or may not have been called Dalton. She went there age just before 5th birthday. If anybody can point me towards local places to look I’d be very grateful
( I do have exact dates in a file I could look up and check when I’m home!)

  9. Hello, I’m researching some items that I believe were owned by Willoughby Statham Smith. Would you be willing to share any information you have on his estate.

I am the year 1 teacher at Newton Poppleford and we are currently doing a history topic about ‘Am I making history?’
We are going to visit the church/cemetary on 27th March and was wondering if you knew of anyone significant from the village that would be interesting for the children to learn about.

I believe my grandmother, Laura Ellen, was born in Newton Poppleford in February 1896 or 97. She emigrated to San Francisco in about 1920. Her father was Herman Hamm. She was the youngest of 12 children. Her father was a stone mason and died when she was about nine. Several of her brothers emigrated to Canada and Australia. One, Wilford, was killed in WW1. Does anyone have any information about the family and are any still in the area?
I have more information about the other children in the family from my aunt. I would like to visit this fall. I live in Portland, Oregon. Susan Barnett, susanb51@hotmail.com
